In many factory setups, Industrial Box PCs are installed inside sealed control cabinets or NEMA enclosures to protect them from dust and heat. While this keeps the hardware safe, it makes the physical power button impossible to reach.
If a system needs a manual reboot, opening a locked cabinet is time-consuming and can be a safety hazard. This is especially useful for fanless industrial computers installed in dust-proof cabinets. A Remote Power Switch solves this by moving the power control to a more convenient location.
On the back of a professional Industrial PC (IPC), you will usually find a small green connector. This is a Phoenix Terminal Block.
This terminal acts as an external bridge for the motherboard's power headers. Instead of reaching inside the case, you can connect two wires to this block to "relocate" the power button functionality anywhere on your machine.
There are several ways to start a computer, but the physical terminal is the industry favorite for a few reasons:
Setting up a remote switch is a "no-soldering" task. It is designed for quick field installation.
Step 1: Strip about 5mm of insulation from your wires.
Step 2: Insert the wires into the PWR and GND pins on the terminal block.
Note: This connection is polarity independent, meaning it doesn't matter which wire goes into which hole.
Step 3: Tighten the screws until the wires are firmly held.
Step 4: Mount your button on the outside of your cabinet and connect the other end of the wires.
| Method | Best For... | Key Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Remote Terminal | Manual Operator Control | Works without OS or Network |
| Auto Power On | Unattended Power Recovery | Automatic restart after power loss |
| Wake-on-LAN | Remote IT Management | Control from a central office |
